Mr Timon Weitkamp worked as a MSc student at Kagera Sugar Limited during the completion of his thesis. He was asked to develop systems that would enable the agricultural staff to better utilize the satellite imagery we were receiving regarding the sugarcane crop.
Timon set about his investigations in a very methodical and systematic manner. He had to engage with various levels of staff to establish their needs, communicating through meetings about what he was doing at various intervals to ensure people understood what he was doing. The work was technical and he successfully communicated in a manner that enabled everyone to understand.
He managed to understand the sugar estates operations as well as crop husbandry practices. He successfully integrated his knowledge of irrigation, crop growth and GIS to formulate a user friendly application. This enabled the farm managers to monitor their current crop performance against historical performance as well as other current field performance using satellite imagery, NDVI, irrigation and yield parameters.
Timon extended himself to understand our practices. He grew in his abilities to develop software programmes to be retrievable on mobile phones and tablets in the field. His efforts definitely enabled us to use the remote sensing technologies more effectively to enhance our management of the crop.
